Mould, damp and wipe-clean maintenance

Traditional tiled bathrooms are usually cursed with grout lines that discolour over time and give mould somewhere to take hold, no matter how carefully you clean them.

Our bathroom wall cladding panels remove that weak (and very annoying) point entirely: a sealed, tongue-and-groove PVC surface with no grout to scrub, stain or regrout. Because the panel face doesn’t absorb water, mould and mildew have nothing to feed on across the surface itself, keeping walls looking cleaner for longer with far less effort.

Cleaning is simple, too. Forget about bleach-heavy cleaners and tiny little brushes; just wipe down with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth or sponge, then rinse with fresh water. In fact, you should avoid abrasive cleaners and neat bleach, which can dull the finish over time.

We have to be realistic, though: panels resist mould on their surface, but they don’t make a bathroom immune to dampness. Good ventilation still matters, and the silicone sealant at panel joints and edges should be checked periodically and reapplied if it cracks or lifts, since that’s where water could otherwise find a way in behind the panel.

Our 5mm panels are the lightest option in our bathroom range. They’re 100% waterproof and make a great choice for bathroom walls where you want a lightweight, easy-to-handle panel.

Our 6mm and 8mm wall panels give you more choice when it comes to widths, finishes and coverage, while still providing the same waterproof protection you need in a bathroom. They’re ideal for areas around the bathtub, sink and other moisture-prone parts of the room.

For shower enclosures, wet rooms and cubicles, our 10mm Gecko Shower Panels are designed specifically for these spaces. Their wider format and more rigid construction make them a practical choice for larger areas with regular direct water contact.

Fitting bathroom panels

Fitting and installing bathroom wall panels is straightforward and simple, and in most cases you won’t even need to touch your existing tiles. Panels bond straight over structurally sound, flat tiled surfaces using a good panel adhesive, so there’s no chipping, dust or mess to deal with first. 

Each panel slots into the next with a simple tongue-and-groove join, creating neat, close-fitting seams once installed. Cut panels around taps, shower valves and other fittings using the method recommended for the selected product and thickness, then finish exposed edges, corners and joins with our wall panel trims. They’re available to match your chosen panel thickness for a clean, professional look throughout.

Wherever a panel meets the bath or shower tray, run a bead of suitable silicone sealant along the join to keep water from tracking behind the panel. Seal all other joints and edges required by the product installation instructions, as this is essential to a watertight installation.

FAQs

Are bathroom wall panels fully waterproof?

Our panels are designed to be waterproof. The high-quality PVC panel surface itself is 100% waterproof, so it won’t absorb water or swell the way plaster or MDF might in a bathroom. Remember that the joints between panels, and wherever panels meet the bath or shower tray, still need to be sealed with silicone to keep the whole installation watertight.

Can bathroom wall panels fit over existing tiles?

In most cases, yes! As long as your existing tiles are sound (e.g. not hugely damaged or structurally unstable), flat and firmly fixed, panels can be bonded straight on top using a proper wall panel adhesive, saving you the mess and cost of stripping tiles back to bare plaster.

Can you use bathroom wall panels inside a shower?

Do bathroom wall panels need grout or sealant?

One of the biggest selling points of our bathroom wall panels is that there’s no grout needed, ever! Our panels use a tongue-and-groove join instead, so there are no grout lines to discolour or scrub. Silicone sealant is still needed at panel joints, and wherever panels meet the bath, shower tray or floor, to stop water getting in behind them.

Do bathroom wall panels get mouldy?

We’ve created our wall panels to be hygienic and easy to clean. The non-porous PVC face and absence of grout lines give mould fewer places to take hold and make the surface easier to wipe down.

However, wall panels aren’t a substitute for good ventilation in bathrooms. Poor or low levels of airflow can still lead to mould elsewhere in the room. Also, any ageing silicone at the joints needs to be regularly checked and replaced if it starts to crack.

How long do bathroom wall panels last?

If you fit your panels with proper installation and sealant at the joints, bathroom wall panels are built to be a long-term, low-maintenance surface. Because there’s no grout to get mucky and no paint to chip, they should last for a good amount of time! 

Can you use bathroom wall panels in wet rooms?
